Week 37
View from the houseboats
Thanksgiving week has been all about flexibility. We made a full Thanksgiving meal for the 3 of us and video visited with family throughout the day. This year we did a lot of work to incorporate Theo’s desire to help into our cooking plans – he helped make the apple pie, zucchini bread, cranberry sauce, and turkey. Sam made a great spreadsheet of cooking schedules for Wednesday and Thursday; we annotated that and our favorite recipes so we will be better prepared next year. We also talked about being mindful of our resilience levels so that we could trade off cooking vs. Theo duty.
In general, it went remarkably well! This is now the third time we’ve cooked a full meal for the three of us in the last 4 years, so it’s becoming normal. I hope you are giving yourself space for your feelings, whether because you honor the National Day of Mourning, because you are missing your usual traditions or people at your table, or because of the latest COVID numbers. Space for tears, time in the sun, exercise, and talking to your best friends can do wonders.
Gratitude/appreciation
Thanksgiving day solo sail! It was too windy to make biking appealing but just warm enough for a sail.
That Sam and I both can and enjoy cooking and baking
The gorgeous sunny weather
Being able to support a number of small businesses as I do some online holiday gift shopping
Things I’m looking forward to
Theo’s future entry into the family Pie Contest when we can next visit the east coast
I welcome responses of any length, including phrases that report in on your wellbeing and small goal. It’s a complicated season for everyone missing family and/or tradition and/or seeing patients – I hope you are able to find space and time for quiet and feelings.
Theo’s now covered a popsicle stick with tape in a quest to make a stop sign (grateful for the quiet to write this) so I’m back to my PTO. Thinking of you and hoping you and your loved ones stay healthy and safe.
